Riley's Second Annotated Bibliograhy

Wekesser, Carol. America's Children: Opposing Viewpoints. San Diego, CA: Greenhaven Press, 1991. Print.

Mundy’s essay argues that Head Start is a confidence builder and a safe place for children and parents alike. She believes that we need to create more facilities since Head Start currently only reaches one in five children living in poverty. Her essay is written in a smooth persuasive matter which made me doubt her credibility at first. As she gets further into the essay however she begins to present facts to support her conclusions and makes some very good points. In reading Mundy and Connell’s essays I am finding a constant pattern of animosity to public school districts (after kindergarten). It seems to me the major problem is that after kids get out of Head Start all the work the program does gets thrown out the window by public schooling. Head Start then gets blamed due to studies showing a decline in IQ 3 years after they get out of the program. The more I read the more I am convinced that public schools are the problem not early education. This has caused me to consider refining my topic to focus on the interaction between Head Start and public schooling.

  1. Riley: The interaction between Head Start and public schools could be incredibly interesting! Or, I wonder if there may be other factors at play too, that explain the problem you begin to address: cultural, linguistic, or economic? I'd be fascinated to see.
