Riley's Third Annotated Bibliography Entry.

Nancy Cotugna, and Connie Vickery. "Educating Early Childhood Teachers About Nutrition: A Collaborative Venture. " Childhood Education 83.4 (2007): 194-198. Career and Technical Education, ProQuest. Web. 10 Mar. 2011.

This was an article on a project conducted by the University of Delaware. They teamed up with head Start creating the “Head Start/ UD Collaborative Nutrition Project.” University nutrition students held a seminar for Head Start faculty to teach them how to better maintain their children’s health. In the article they described teachers as the “gate keepers” of child nutrition. They say that it is important to teach kids about nutrition at an early age. Currently 13% of children between the age of 2-5 (Head Start age) are overweight. Often times this can be due to eating out. Studies show that Pre-schoolers eat out 18% of the time (mostly at fast food joints). Because of this it is important that Head Start and other early childhood development programs encourage healthy living early in the child’s life. It is also important that they sit down with their children and create family like environment for them to eat in. It is really cool to hear this because I see many of the healthy eating tips in the article utilized in the facility I am volunteering at.
