Hello I'm Alberto and I'm a sophomore at BSU. I'm currently majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering.  Some of my hobbies include running, working out, listening to music, reading the news, and hanging with friends. To get a sense what of who I am I would to share with you some of the stuff I enjoy on the internet:
Lifehacker.com - This is one of those life tips blogs that covers a bit of  everything from technology, to life strategies, and  even cooking tips.
News.google.com - I enjoy knowing whats going in the world.
And  finally I leave you with funny video I found on Youtube.

Jewell, Mary. "Undocumented -- with College Dreams." Educational Leadership 66.7 (2009): 48-52. Academic Search Premier. EBSCO. Web. 31 Jan. 2011.
This article talks about the experiences of Sergio, an illegal alien going through high school, learning English and trying to go to college. It also discusses about some of the obstacles that illegal aliens face such the fear of being deported at any time if they try to continue their education. Sergio, because he does not have the necessary documentation to be in this country, he finds his ability to receive financial aid is limited. He does though eventually find enough aid, and is able to attend a local university.
The author Mary Jewell  is an English as a second language teacher who taught  Sergio English in High School. As a teacher she wants the best for her students, regardless of their status . As a instructor she sees  these talented kids who want a education and are capable of so much. But because of their status they are not able to continue their education. The author wants reform for people like Sergio striving for a  better education.
Although I agree with mostly with the author, it's still of complex problem. The author said that money has already been spent on these students, it would be a shame to let this investment that society has made go to waste. But it's going to cost money to implement change. One problem can be solved, but more issues will come up with it. Their is also still an issue with family, can they deport the parents and not the student?
Looking at this source, I'm asking myself questions such as what would the opposition say? Do all teachers feel the same way? How many students are here illegally in the U.S? Of those here, how many actually want to succeed? Do teachers feel guilty knowing that their students are here illegally? The Author talked about the Dream Act, which I know failed in congress this past year, I wonder what current legislation is in the works. how does the author feel about the denial of automatic citizenship that is in some state's senates?
Hi Alberto:
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the link to lifehacker. It seems like an incredibly useful site, and I didn't know about it.
I have some friends that went into electrical engineering, and it's a good line of business. I'm looking forward to working with you over the course of the semester, and let me know if you have any questions or comments going forward!
Alberto: Great job with your initial post! I agree that your first article leads in to some complex challenges: as a first-year composition instructor, I'm constantly reminded of how the political conversation surrounding immigration (among other things) complicates my goals as a teacher. Often in difficult to anticipate ways.
ReplyDeleteOne trouble I had, as I worked my way through your post, was it wasn't entirely clear to me what Jewell was forwarding as an argument or what her own concerns were. I could tell you were reacting to portions of her text, but these portions of her text weren't entirely6 visible to me. We'll talk about how to incorporate paraphrase/quotation/summary on Wednesday, and hopefully this will help. The important thing when citing sources, is to leave a trail of bread-crumbs for your reader, so that they can have a granular view of what you read and what you're responding to.
Keep up the good work!
I feel that using an educator's perspective is a great idea! They are the individuals dealing with these students straight forward everyday. I also agree that the issue of financial aid is a vital key in order to continue education. Talking about the complications that people have to deal with, such as money and citizenship, before entering the classroom brings a lot of incite to readers who may not know these difficulties.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't cite and include paraphrases from the author in my bibliography, so that is something we both can work on. A lot of informing the reader can be achieved when you use one quote from your source for your bibliography/paper and use the rest of the paragraph to talk about it and explain why that point is important.
This seems like a great resource for your future paper! Plus it seemed to lead you to propose a lot of different questions that can make a great paper later! Awesome job! :)
I just had a thought, talking about the differences between teaching English to a child versus teaching English to a high schooler or college student could be a good topic to address. :)
