Riley's Research Question Draft
At first I was going to make my question about the accuracy of the Health and Welfare study that I brought up in my first two Bibliography entries. However there was no doubt in my mind that I would have become bored with it. There was also a strong chance that I would have run into a dead end. I later realized I am much more interested in what life in poverty is like for children. As a society I think we look at poverty as the result of irresponsibility and laziness. Most don’t think about the fact that families make up a large amount of those living in poverty. As a result people tend to forget about the children of these families who don’t really have any say over what happens to them. All though the effect poverty has on children is a tough issue to address; it is also a worthy one. I don’t have much information yet, so my question is still pretty broad, but it is something I am really passionate and curious about. I grew up in a low income family. Even though I was better off than many of the kids I will be working with, I feel like I can really relate to them. There is also the possibility that I could find a way to incorporate my interest in the Health and Welfare study into this topic. So my question right now is; how does poverty negatively affect children below the poverty line, and how does head start work to reverse some of the negative effects? Like I said this question is still pretty broad, but I feel with time it will be fairly easy to narrow down. I am afraid that if I try to do so now I will reach a dead end, and have to back track. A possibility for the future though, is concentrating on one singular effect of poverty, such as mental or nutritional development, or even the long term effects.

The fact that you thought your previous research would bore you to death made me laugh. But it was a very good thing you addressed it and moved on. I like where you are going now.. it is very close to the same types of questions i'm interested in too!
ReplyDeleteGood work here. The question does seem a little broad, but as you say, it can be narrowed down later. Considering your SL experience, it might be a good idea to focus on education in some way?
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work! :)
